Self-Esteem of Older Adults

Self-Esteem of Older Adults

According to a study published by the American Psychological Association, middle life is when people enjoy high self-esteem. At age 60 where self-esteem peaks, a decline is expected to follow.

Among the theorized reasons for this are seniors’ increasing health issues, change in roles due to retirement, and isolated living arrangements.

An in-home care plan must be created with consideration to this social reality. Seeing that the decline of self-esteem is inevitable in seniors, caregivers must pay extra attention to supporting patients’ mental health. Corresponding initiatives can include:

  • Excellent grooming systems where seniors are given the freedom to choose their clothing
  • Hygienics that goes beyond the basic and includes skin care for aging skin
  • Assistance with daily tasks that are just enough to support and does not overstep the patient’s capacities
  • Interest-based recreational activities in which seniors are left to pursue in their own pace and skill level

Home care must be comprehensive. At Safely Home, we work to provide our clients with specialized care assistance. We account for every seniors’ quirks and unique needs, including their emotional conditions.
